Can atomic physicists help reinvent Introductory Physics?

چکیده

Much effort has been and is being devoted to the reform of the teaching of physics. This has led to many new and imaginative approaches to the delivery of the course material, but a perusal of today’s Introductory Physics textbooks indicates that their basic structure has changed little in over fifty years. A radical restructuring is proposed that begins with a modern atomic picture rather than a Newtonian world view. The task is discussed in the context of existing practices, factors inhibiting reform, and strategies that could have a significant impact. If the pedagogic advantages of the atomic world view are to be realized, it seems clear that the research-active AMO physics community, and not just pedagogic researchers, must be involved in the development of this new

The Structure of Light Nuclei and Its Effect on Precise Atomic Measurements

My talk will consist of three parts: (a) what every atomic physicist needs to know about the physics of light nuclei [and no more]; (b) what nuclear physicists can do for atomic physics; (c) what atomic physicists can do for nuclear physics. A brief qualitative overview of the nuclear force and calculational techniques for light nuclei will be presented, with an emphasis on debunking myths and ...

فیزیک کاربردی-1: مقدمه‌ای بر فیزیک اعصاب

In recent years, many physics departments have turned from pure physics into applied physics so that physics is no longer taught as a major in undergraduate or graduate studies without any specific application. This is due to the physics solutions brought for researchers in different disciplines, and that is for the analytical skills of physicists. From the first differential equation developed...

Introducing Ill-Structured Problems in Introductory Physics Recitations

One important aspect of physics instruction is helping students develop better problem solving expertise. Besides enhancing the content knowledge, problems help students develop different cognitive abilities and skills. This paper focuses on ill-structured problems. These problems are different from traditional “end of chapter” well-structured problems. They do not have one right answer and thu...

Motives: an Introductory Survey for Physicists

We survey certain accessible aspects of Grothendieck’s theory of motives in arithmetic algebraic geometry for mathematical physicists, focussing on areas that have recently found applications in quantum field theory. An appendix (by Matilde Marcolli) sketches further connections between motivic theory and theoretical physics. post hoc, ergo ante hoc – Umberto Eco, Interpretation and overinterpr...

Students know what physicists believe, but they don’t agree: A study using the CLASS survey

We measured what students perceive physicists to believe about physics and solving physics problems and how those perceptions differ from the students’ personal beliefs. In this study, we used a modified version of the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey which asked students to respond to each statement with both their personal belief and the response they thought a physicist would...
